What changes the price
- Private vs group. One-to-one lessons cost more per hour and progress faster; group classes spread the cost but move at the group's pace.
- Lesson length. 30, 45 and 60-minute formats are common. Young children usually start with the shortest format.
- Instrument. Piano, guitar and voice are the most widely taught; instruments with fewer teachers in the city can cost more.
- Level. Exam preparation and advanced repertoire require more experienced teachers and longer lessons.
- Location. Central districts such as District 1 are convenient but add travel or studio cost; home visits carry a supplement.

Costs people forget
- A home instrument to practise on — a used digital piano is often enough.
- Sheet music or method books, though many resources are shared digitally.
- Exam or recital fees, only if the student chooses that path.
- Travel time — a school you can reach in 15 minutes is a school you keep going to.
How to compare fairly
Ask three questions of any school: who exactly teaches the lesson, what happens if you miss a class, and how progress is reported to parents. At HK Music School lessons are taught by a working professional musician, missed lessons can be rescheduled through the student platform, and every class leaves a written progress note families can read in English, Vietnamese or Spanish.
